Birth certificate norm relaxed

Special Correspondent

Decision follows widespread demand

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has decided not to insist on submission of birth certificates at the time of admission of students to schools.

The Education Minister, E. T. Mohammed Basheer, told a news conference here on Tuesday that the Government had decided to grant three months' time to parents to submit the birth certificates of their wards. The decision was taken in the light of widespread demand for relaxation of the admission norms, he said.

Mr. Basheer said the Government had also decided to centralise admissions to B Ed. courses so as to ensure that the merit quota is filled from the merit list and reservation norms are observed at the time of admission. The decision was taken as part of efforts to improve quality in school education, he added.

Quality improvement

The Minister said the thrust of the Education Department's efforts during the new academic year beginning on Tuesday would be on quality improvement. He had had discussions with representatives of teachers' organisations today on the subject and had been offered all support in the effort. Training for teachers of Standards IX and X had been completed. Only training for Standard VIII teachers remained to be completed, he said.

Steps had been taken to fill teachers' vacancies on temporary basis, fill vacancies of district-level personnel in charge of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) and create regional directorates for higher secondary education. From now on, all the language textbooks for Plus Two classes would be those prepared by the State Council for Education, Research and Training (SCERT). The Government had also decided to get printing of all textbooks done by the public sector Kerala Books and Publications Society (KBPS) at Kochi. Printing of textbooks for the new academic year have already been completed, Mr. Basheer said.

School libraries

The Education Minister said the Government would launch a massive scheme this year to strengthen school libraries. A task force, constituted for the purpose of submitting recommendations on library revamp, was expected to submit its report in a week. Steps would be taken to strengthen the libraries, particularly at upper primary and high school levels.
