KANNUR: Elaborate election and law and order arrangements were under way in Koothuparamba and Azhikode Assembly constituencies as the election campaigning came to a halt on Tuesday evening.

Official machinery in the district was geared up for the bypolls being held on June 2. While Koothuparamba has 1,53,231 voters, 1,30,037 people in the Azhikode constituency are eligible to exercise their franchise. Koothuparamba and Azhikode have service voters numbering 534 and 380 respectively.

Officials here said that 269 polling booths, including 148 in Koothuparamba and 121 in Azhikode, were put up. As many as 305 electronic voting machines would be used in the constituencies, they said. The Deputy Collector (Election) could be contacted on phone number 2709140 to seek the redressal of any polling related issues, the officials said. The Returning Officers of Koothuparmmba (Phone: 2700552) and Azhikode (Phone: 2768975) could also be contacted, they added.

As many as 131 vehicles, 28 in Koothuparamba and the rest in Azhikode, would be operated for polling duty. The officials said that use of mobile phones was banned within 100 metres of the polling booth. The District Collector, K. S. Srinivas, who is also the District Electoral Officer, urged voters in the constituencies to come out for exercising their franchise on June 2. The polling would start at 7 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m.

The Inspector General of Police (Northern Range), M. N. Krishnamurthy, told reporters here that elaborate law and order arrangements were being made to hold the elections free and fair. As many as 1,800 police personnel headed by 120 Sub-Inspectors, 21 Circle Inspectors and eight Dy.SPs would be deployed. One control room each would be set up at Valapattanam and Koothuparamba, he said.

The IG said the SP, Sureshraj Purohit, would camp at Koothuparamba and the Deputy Inspector General (Kannur Range) at Azhikode to oversee security arrangements in the constituencies. He said he would camp at Kannur on the polling day to coordinate law and order arrangements. The police had already pressed into service 100 vehicles for patrolling.
