State seeks aid for seawall construction

Special Correspondent

Drinking water for tsunami-hit

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : The State Government has urged the Centre to consider financial support for seawall construction along Kerala's tsunami-affected coastline under the Disaster Management Fund. The Government, at present, is meeting the construction cost of seawalls under the Chief Minister's Relief Fund so that the tsunami relief and rehabilitation work would not suffer on account of technical and procedural problems.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Water Resources and Forest Minister, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, said construction of seawall had started in Alappuzha, Kollam and Ernakulam. In Alappad, work had started on a 480-metre stretch at an estimated cost of Rs.30 lakhs. In Arattupuzha, work on a seawall estimated to cost Rs.2.62 crores stretching over 2.5 km had been tendered, while in Adhakaranazhi (north and south), a sum of Rs.7.5 crores would be spent on seawall construction.

ADB grant

Mr. Radhakrishnan said that Rs.38 crores out of the Rs.60-crore Asian Development Bank grant would be utilised to provide drinking water in the tsunami-affected areas such as Alappad, Klappana, Ochira and Karunagapally. The Government was examining a proposal for a Rs.59.71- crore project for drinking water supply in these areas with World Bank aid.

The Minister said that steps would be taken to improve drinking water supply in Kochi city and the work on a Rs.50-crore on an augmentation project would start soon.

He said that Vypeen, which was facing one of the worst drinking water shortages, would achieve total coverage by July. In 2005-06, the Government has proposed a Rs.9.08-lakh regulator-cum-bridge over the Periyar at Manjumala, Rs.29-lakh on construction of boat jetty near the High Court in Kochi, Rs.14 lakhs on two boat jetties at Poothotta and South Paravur and Rs. 87.5 lakhs on lift irrigations schemes in Mekkad, Chathamattom, and Kannamkulam, Rs.12.5 crores on garbage disposal in Guruvayur township.
