Woman killed

KOTTAYAM: Vaikom police have arrested Sadasivan a resident of Ennackapally near Ullala in connection with the death of his wife. According to the police, Sadasivan and his wife Sukumari (58) were not in good terms and on Tuesday noon, he stabbed his wife who was taking a nap in their house. When she ran out of her house he overpowered her, doused her in kerosene and set her aflame. He later surrendered before the police in an inebriated condition.

Plea to end discrimination

ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Government Contractors' Association State Committee has urged the State Government to end the discrimination against Government contractors regarding the payment of taxes.

Math suspends work on houses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Mata Amritanandamayi Math has suspended the work on the houses being built by it for tsunami victims at Valiyazheekkal in Alappuzha district as people in the area have started turning their ire at the Government for not constructing seawall in the area and at the Math by blocking its vehicles in the worksite, according to a press note issued by the Math spokesman, Dhyanamritha Chaithanya, here on Tuesday. The press note said that as the local people, including the beneficiaries, were not cooperating with the work, the Math had no alternative but to suspend the work in the district. The Government had allotted 150 houses to the Math in the area. — Special Correspondent

PSC holds special sitting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Public Service Commission considered 386 complaints during a special sitting held here on Tuesday to hear the complaints of candidates and the general public. It took decisions on 170 complaints. The meeting directed that the remaining complaints be looked into immediately and replies given to them. Some 190 candidates appeared before the Commission directly. The Chairman, members, secretary and top officials attended the special sitting. — Special Correspondent

Withheld results published

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The results of 36 candidates who wrote the engineering / medical entrance examinations but withheld for various reasons have been published by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. The results of other candidates withheld for similar reasons will be declared in phases after proper scrutiny, an official press note issued here on Tuesday said. — Staff Reporter

Probe ordered into DIG's `revelation'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Director General of Police has ordered an inquiry into the DIG, Central Zone, R. Sreelekha's revelation in a fortnightly women's magazine that she had `saved' the accused in a murder case when she was serving in a district in South Kerala. The order was issued on the basis of a complaint submitted by the human rights activist, Jomon Puthenpurackal. According to the complaint, the DIG had stated in her column in the magazine that she had let off a woman who had strangled her three-day-old infant and thrown the body into the Vembanad lake. - Special Correspondent

C-DiT courses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DiT) has invited applications for the IBM Main Frame and AS/400 courses being conducted by it. Those who have passed B.Tech., MCA or M.Sc. Computer Science/Information Technology with not less than 60 per cent marks are eligible to apply. Those who are appearing for the final year examination can also apply. The admission of candidates for the course will be based on an entrance examination to be held on June 5. Reconstituted

New Delhi: The Union Government today reconstituted Coir Board with C. Chandran as its Chairman. There are 39 other part-time members on the board, an official release said here. The Coir Board is a statutory body established for promoting the overall development of the coir industry and uplift of the living conditions of the workers engaged in the sector. - PTI

KOZHIKODE: The `Anti-tobacco Day' was observed under the aegis of the Trust for Prevention of Health Hazards and the Malabar branch of the Indian Dental Society. A workshop organised to mark the occasion was inaugurated by M.A. Abdulla, superintendent-Chest Hospital. Dental college senior lecturer Sudha among others spoke on the occasion. Free medicines were given to those found unable to give up tobacco use. Tests were also conducted to determine the extent of dependence on nicotine. — Special Correspondent

Tribal welfare schemes

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Tribal Welfare department has implemented schemes to the tune of Rs. 88.41 lakhs in the district. According to an official statement here on Monday, Rs. 13.56 lakhs had been spent on education of tribal children in different parts of the district and Rs. 30 lakhs for running the tribal hostel at Vadasserikkara. A total of Rs 1.5 lakhs has been spent on medical treatment of tribals. — Staff Reporter

Boy commits suicide

KOLLAM: A 15-year-old boy who failed to qualify for higher education when SSLC results were announced committed suicide by hanging.

The police said that the boy, Chandu, had committed suicide at his grandmother's house at Chathannur this morning when there was nobody there. Chandu's father had scolded him, they said. The Chathannur Police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter
