KOLLAM: The Kollam District Literacy Mission has reportedly become the first literacy mission unit in the country to have its own building. The building will be formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at a function to be held here on Thursday. On the occasion the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, will inaugurate the Information Technology Centre attached to the complex. The District Panchayat president, Aisha Potti, told press persons here on Tuesday that the building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. While the literacy missions were started with the only aim of promoting literacy, the district unit had engaged itself in a variety of programmes which helped improve the livings standards of hundreds of persons. With the opening of its own building, the District Literacy Mission will be better placed to coordinate various activities in a more productive manner, Ms. Potti said. The complex will comprise a reference library, information centre, permanent vocational and information technology training centres and a conference hall.
Awareness campaign
The district literacy mission had played a major role in spreading awareness on the construction of low cost houses. As a result of the awareness campaign, the concept had become popular in the district. In order to promote the products manufactured at the centres started by the literacy mission, 12 successful district level sales exhibitions were organised. Products worth lakhs of rupees were sold through such melas. Remarkable achievements were made in controlling the number of school drop outs in the district. The performance of the mission had even attracted the attention of agencies from various States of the country and abroad. Representatives of these agencies arrived here for studying the Kollam District Literacy Mission's style of functioning, Ms. Potti said.
