PATHANAMTHITTA: Although the Government has got a major share in Mannam Sugar Mills Cooperative Limited, the Mannam Memorial Cooperative Ayurvedic Medical College coming up on the 138-acre mill premises at Pandalam is most likely to be the flagship ayurveda medical institution of the Nair Service Society (NSS). It is a Rs 10-crore venture. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, said on Sunday that the Government would consider returning its share in the sugar mill cooperative once the medical college proved its potential. He was inaugurating a 100-bed in-patient block of the hospital.

The NSS assistant secretary, G. Sukumaran Nair, said that the ayurveda medical college named after the social reformer and founder of the NSS Mannathu Padmanabhan would have all the pre-requisites of a deemed university.

Mr. Sukumaran Nair said that P.R. Sukumaran Nair, former principal of Vaidyaratnam Ayurvedic College, Olloor, had been appointed project officer.

Master plan

Mr. Sukumaran Nair said that the Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam at Aranmula under the State Cultural Affairs Department had prepared a master plan for the proposed medical college and hospital. The detailed plan strictly adhered to the principles of `Vasthu Sastra', he said.

The total plinth area of the medical college complex will be 1,20,000 sq ft. It will house a hospital block (60,000 sq ft), college (45,000 sq ft), administrative block (10,000 sq ft), library, two hostels, and modern auditorium.

Mr. Sukumaran Nair said efforts would be made to develop the ayurveda centre into a centre of excellence by incorporating state-of-the-art technology. There would be a helipad too. There will be a research wing and a pharmaceutical division, besides special blocks for `rasayana' treatment and `kutipravesikom,' Dr. Sukumaran Nair said. He said that the Government had already accorded no-objection certificate for the proposed medical college. The college would be affiliated to Kerala University. It would start functioning in a self-financing mode in the next few months, if it gets sanction from the Central Council of Indian Medicines, Dr. Sukumaran Nair said.
