KASARAGOD: The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said that the State is losing its credentials in the health care sector even as it retains its top position in the country. He was speaking after inaugurating the new district hospital complex at Chemmattumvayal, near Kanhangad, this morning. Mr. Chandy said the State was not getting adequate funds for developing its healthcare sector. The healthcare scenario is advancing and it is a challenge to ensure that the facilities in the sector are on a par with those in other States in India, Mr. Chandy said. The Hosdurg MLA, M. Kumaran, presided over the function attended by MLAs, C.T. Ahmedali; K.P. Satheesh Chandran; K.V. Kunhiraman and Cherkalam Abdulla and the district panchayat president, E. Padmavathy. The district hospital has been functioning in a congested and dilapidated building in Kanhangad town. The shifting of the hospital to the new premises was delayed with the district panchayat insisting that adequate medical staff be posted to cater to the multi-storeyed speciality hospital. The hospital was turned to a 400-bed one despite the shortage of medical and paramedical staff. Initially, the hospital will have a general ward; a full-fledged maternity wing; a psychiatry ward and a 24-hour casualty. However, the staff strength of the district hospital is, at present, less than half the required number. Earlier, Mr. Chandy inaugurated the new sub-divisional office of the Police Department near the AR Camp here.
