NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday carried out a major anti-encroachment drive near Old Delhi railway station to clear all illegal structures, occupants and squatters from at least two main roads in the area. The plan is to decongest the approach roads to the railway station to allow free flow of traffic. Accompanied by a large number of police personnel, the demolition squad of the civic body removed encroachments from Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, Kauria Pul and H C Sain Road falling in the City zone. Nearly 100 unauthorised squatters were also removed from footpaths and Government land, while 10 truck-loads of goods was also seized. Similarly, a room constructed by the Corporation at Kauria Pul was also vacated of unauthorised persons and handed over to the Sanitation Department. According to senior MCD officials, encroachments on the roads leading to Old Delhi railway station has been a major hurdle in allowing free flow of traffic. A large number of "dhabas", motor mechanic shops and other small makeshift shops that had come up over the years were all removed during the drive. Similarly, encroachments on footpaths that were causing difficulty to pedestrians have also been removed, he added. The MCD has now asked the Delhi police to see to it that encroachments do not come up again on the roads and has decided to clear encroachments from neighbouring localities in the congested Walled City area.
