Central Excise officer held on graft charge

NEW DELHI: The Cyber Crime unit of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a person on the charge of fraudulently booking railway tickets using stolen credit card details of other persons. The case was recently registered by the CBI on the complaint of an IRCTC official that some unknown persons, between October 2003 and March 2004, fraudulently booked about 40 railway tickets through the IRCTC website allegedly using details of stolen credit cards.

During investigation, a resident of Mumbai was arrested and the agency claimed that the accused admitted to having booked about 70 railway tickets through the IRCTC website using details of cards which he had stolen when he was working with a bar and restaurant near Metro, Mumbai. He disclosed that he used credit card details of the customers who visited the restaurant and sold the booked tickets to his friends and other passengers. Stolen credit card numbers and some fake railway identity cards have also been recovered from his possession.

Complaint

In a separate case, the CBI on Tuesday arrested a Superintendent of Central Excise posted at Excise Range IV, E-Division, Byculla, Mumbai for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.1.25 lakhs at the complainant's office at Mazagaon.

The complainant, a businessman dealing in iron mercantile fabrication, had approached the CBI with a complaint that he had filed his excise return in the Range office and Division office of the Central excise. His establishment is exempted from Central Excise duty having an excisable turnover of less than Rs.1crore. The accused Superintendent and an Inspector of Central excise had jointly visited his office and taken all his records and after three days returned those without any notice or memo. The officials had subsequently allegedly threatened the complainant that liability of more than Rs.3 lakhs would be raised against him unless he paid them a bribe of Rs.1.50 lakhs. However, the demand was later reduced to Rs.1.25 lakhs, the CBI said in a release here.

On receipt of the complaint, a case was registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code against both the accused. A trap was laid and the Superintendent of Central Excise was arrested while allegedly accepting the bribe of Rs.1.25 lakhs.
