Sonia to skip NCP session

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will not attend the national convention of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Surat on June 9 and 10. However, she will depute a senior leader for the inaugural session.

Ms. Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel formally conveyed the decision to the NCP leader, Tariq Anwar. NCP president Sharad Pawar and a senior leader, Praful Patel, met her on May 10 and extended a personal invitation. On May 8, the two NCP leaders met Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat to formally invite him for the convention. He, according to NCP spokesman D. P. Tripathi, had accepted the invitation, as had the CPI (M)leadership.

Another key invitee is the former NCP leader, P. A. Sangma, who had broken ranks with the party ahead of the last Lok Sabha elections over its decision to ally with the Congress. Though Mr. Sangma has indicated that he wanted to return to the NCP and the party has reciprocated, a formal announcement is yet to be made. Since Mr. Sangma fought and won the Lok Sabha election on the All India Trinamool Congress ticket, the loss of membership of the Lower House is delaying his return. But, he made his position clear all through the post-recess Budget session by defying the National Democratic Alliance boycott of Parliamentary proceedings.

According to NCP sources, Mr. Sangma was practically with the party. but would make the final break after ensuring his return to the Lok Sabha. To this effect, The NCP is said to be in touch with the Congress to ensure that it does not field anyone against Mr. Sangma in the by-election that would become necessary in the eventuality of his leaving the Trinamool Congress.
