Raghuvansh remains evasive

Special Correspondent

TRS chief's claim on UPA constituents' support for statehood

TIRUPATI: The Union Labour Minister and the Telengana Rashtra Samithi chief, K. Chandrasekhar Rao's claim yesterday that all the 12 constituents of the UPA except the Congress have given their consent for statehood for Telengana does not seem to carry conviction if the reaction of Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Central Minister and a member of the UPA sub-committee on the Telengana issue, is any indication.

Mr. Singh who was here today to participate in a number of government programmes remained evasive to reporter's repeated query for his comments on Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao's claim. He looked the other way when mediapersons took to his notice Mr. Rao's reported claim that he had the copies of the consent letters given by the UPA constituents to the sub-committee. Evading a direct answer, Mr. Singh said that the sub-committee headed by Pranab Mukherjee had written not only to the UPA constituents but to all political parties seeking their views on the demand.

Some had given their views and some were in the process of giving, he said and added that committee had only one sitting so far. "We will have to have another sitting," he said but could not hazard any guess either about the possible time of the next sitting or the time when the committee could be expected to submit its final report. The panel chief has to decide that, he said.

Mr. A. Narendra, Minister of State for Rural Development and the No 2 in the TRS hierarchy who was also present with the Minister, was at pains to explain the position to mediapersons when they confronted Mr. Prasad for his comments on the TRS chief's claim.
