HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has dubbed the TDP's three-day Mahanadu a dishonest and meaningless exercise that benefited neither it nor the Government. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said the TDP leadership spent time only on logrolling and failed to offer constructive criticism. Its `holier than thou' attitude had prevented it from getting realistic even after being in the Opposition for one year. "It is time they learnt their job properly," he said. Dr. Reddy said the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, failed to put factionalism to rest. "One cannot expect such regional parties to fare better. They thrive by fanning caste and regional flames. Mr. Naidu is no different," he added.
Penukonda violence
The factionalism in Penukonda was by far the worst ever as it had a Maoist and Reorganisation Committee (ROC) dimension to it. "Mr. Naidu should take 100 per cent responsibility for the violence that led to seven deaths on the day of nomination," Dr. Reddy said regretting the TDP's failure in keeping factional families out of the poll fray. "The Mahanadu did not evaluate our performance in any sector. It did not clarify whether it supported Jalayagnam or supply of free power. It failed to mention the impact of our programmes like land distribution and loans to DWCRA women at 3 per cent." He said it was the duty of the Opposition to study developmental programmes without bias and suggest improvements. He said the Government had provided Rs. 1, 238 crores to DWCRA women in the first year itself as against the meagre Rs. 330 crores allocation made by the TDP annually.
