Eight injured

KURNOOL: Eight persons sustained injuries when an autorickshaw overturned near Venkayapalli on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday. The mishap occurred when the tyre of the auto burst. The injured were residents of Military Colony and were on their way to Alampur. They were rushed to the hospital. - Staff Reporter

Dharna staged

CUDDAPAH: Workers of oil mills in Badvel and Gopavaram mandals staged dharna before the Badvel MRO office on Tuesday, under the aegis of CITU, demanding minimum wages. The CPI(M) divisional Secretary, B. Jakraiah, alleged that oil mills workers were denied minimum wages for several years.The CITU district Secretary, C.H. Chandrasekhar, Oil Mill Hamali Union president, Chantaiah, secretary, Vengaiah and the leaders submitted a memorandum to the MRO, Chennakesava Reddy. - Staff Reporter

Lorry cleaner dies in mishap

CUDDAPAH: A lorry cleaner died when a flooring stone-laden lorry, coming from Macherla in Guntur district, overturned on a roadside near Kaluvakatta in Porumamilla mandal in the early hours of Tuesday. The cleaner, Hussain's both legs were severed when the flooring stones fell on him and he died on the spot, police said. The lorry driver and his friend escaped unhurt. The Porumamilla CI, Rajendra, registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Four injured

CUDDAPAH: Four persons were injured, one of them critically, when a jeep coming from Badvel to Cuddapah, overturned near the APSP XI Battalion at Bhakrapet in Siddhavatam mandal on Monday night. Ganta Penchalaiah (45), of Radhakrishna Colony in Badvel sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Tirupati, police said. Three other injured persons were admitted to Cuddapah Government hospital. The Siddhavatam police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Student drowned in Manair dam

KARIMNAGAR: A 10th class student of English Union school in the town was drowned in the swirling water of Lower Manair Dam (LMD) reservoir when he went for a swim on the outskirts of the town on Tuesday. According to the Karimnagar rural police, K. Rohit Reddy (15)'s friends who were on the shore could not help him as they do not know swimming. - Staff Reporter

Vice-Chancellor to hold additional charge

TIRUPATI: The Vice-Chancellor of S.V. University, S. Jayarama Reddy, has been asked to hold full additional charge as Vice-Chancellor of Dravidian University, Kuppam. An order to this effect was received by Prof. Reddy from the Principal Secretary, Higher Education. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The CITU State Committee has demanded `just' rate of interim relief in the Pay Revision Commission report. S.Veeraiah, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Monday urged the Government to give up plans to get hold on salaries of employees. - Staff Reporter

Maoist deputy commander surrenders

Kakinada: The deputy commander of Maoists local guerrilla squad of Galikonda, Nakka Suresh alias Gopi (18), surrendered before the East Godavari Police Superintendent, V. Naveen Chand, here on Tuesday night. He is a tribal, hailing from Duscharti of Addateegala mandal in the agency area. - Correspondent

240 pirated CDs seized

ELURU: The police raided a video parlour in I Town area on Tuesday and recovered 240 pirated CDs containing 29 films. The video shop owner, Golla Govardhan Rao, was arrested. The raid was conducted following a tip-off by members of the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber. The pirated CDs contained the latest films such as `Thagore', `Gollmaal', `Aadi' and `Vishnu' - Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Sundarakanda, which is the heart of Valmiki Ramayana, will be available in a concise form. The former general manager of MMTC, Jonnalagadda Sitaram Anjaneyulu, has penned `Saptasati Sundarakanda,' which will be released on Wednesday at Visakha Public Library. The sale proceeds of the book, priced at Rs.108, will go to Sri Kodanda Rama temple at Kotipalli in East Godavari district. - Staff Reporter
