Scholar by day, maidservant tops in studies

Timely help: Dodda Rupa Devi and topped SSC examination in her school, receiving a cheque for Rs. 10,000 from P. Lakshmi. The Visakha-II MLA, S. Rangaraju, is also seen.

VISAKHAPATNAM D: uring school time, she was concentration personified in the classroom and after school hours, she laboured hard to earn her study expenses working as a maid in stalls located in the shopping complex of her school.

Dodda Rupa Devi's hard work has paid dividends, as she topped the school in the SSC public examination from the ZP High School for Girls in Gopalapatnam, with an aggregate of 522 marks. She scored more than 90 in mathematics, science, social studies and Telugu (first language) and 78 each in English and Hindi.

Such a score from a student is commendable and should be considered outstanding in the case of Rupa Devi. She lost her father, but that did not deter her from the goal of continuing with studies. To meet the expenses, she did not mind working as a maidservant.

However, her hard work and the resultant success did not go unnoticed and help came at the right time. Daughters of the late P.T. Rao, Sucharita and Kalyani Madhuri, who are NRIs living in the US and Australia respectively, decided to donate Rs. 10,000 to the girl to meet the expenses of studying Intermediate.

Had this help not come from them, Rupa might not have realised the dream of further studies.

The cheque for Rs.10,000 was handed over to Rupa by Lakshmi, the mother of Sucharita and Kalyani, on Monday on the occasion of the first death anniversary of P.T. Rao, in the presence of the Visakha-II MLA, S. Rangaraju.
