This Day That Age
Education as the acquisition of wisdom has to be got not merely by learning from books, but from what is called the art of cultivating "your own self, your own nature," said the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, inaugurating the fifth Mysore State Adult Education Conference at Mandya, 60 miles from Bangalore, on May 30. While literacy was essential, mere literacy was not education. If they were merely learned, but had not the roots of wisdom, that kind of learning was more a calamity than a blessing. "If you merely acquire knowledge of the aksharas and if your moral senses have not been developed, you become a rakshasa. Mere intellectual power or learning cannot be regarded as enough for education." The great countries which had brought about wars in this world were not countries which were lacking in literacy. They made advances scientifically, industrially and educationally too. But it was these countries that again and again brought us to war.
