ADILABAD: The new academic year commencing next month will see the Education Department concentrating on curbing the dropout incidence among students. In this regard, 34 alternative schools are being upgraded into primary schools. Besides, 74 primary schools are being upgraded into upper primary schools. "After finishing their stint at alternative schools like bridge course schools, most students feel the need for a primary school available locally. So is the case with students in many areas who finish primary education only to find the upper primary schools located at a difficult distance," observes the District Educational Officer (DEO), P.B. Narsinga Rao. "Such students take recourse to dropping out of the school and they are the ones who will benefit from the upgradation of schools," he says. Sanction of new primary schools opens scope for recruiting teachers also. The DEO says proposals for fresh recruitment will be done some time later. Until the new recruitment, the schools will make do with vidya volunteers. The newly upgraded schools which are located in far-flung tribal areas mostly will have new buildings. These buildings will be built by the funds meant for development of infrastructure under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Despite the district standing second in terms of pass percentage in SSC, 2005, some lacunae stared the Education department in its face. A large number of students failed in Telugu as first language. The DEO says a school-wise review of the performance will be held in due course. "The success at the examinations has showed that the `guess paper' approach to SSC preparations has paid off. We will bring out a book giving not only important lessons and chapters in them but important questions in concerned chapters for the benefit of SSC students this year," he says.
