Murder trial conviction in record 16 days

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Just a day after a city Fast Track Court (FTC) completed a murder case trial in 17 days, another FTC broke its record by winding one up in just 16 days.

The FTC-IV Judge, Duraisamy, found Venkatesan guilty of clubbing to death Sekar at T. Nagar on May 15. The Mambalam police said Venkatesan assaulted the victim after a petty quarrel.

The police arrested the accused and a charge sheet was laid before the FTC-IV. Eleven prosecution witnesses were examined by advocate Paramaguru on behalf of the prosecution. Legal aid counsel S. Valliammal defended the accused.

On Tuesday, 16 days after the murder, the Judge said the police had proved the charges against the accused beyond any reasonable doubt. Finding Venkatesan guilty , the Judge sentenced him to life imprisonment. He also imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000.

The court commended the efforts of the investigating team in helping the court to complete the trial in record time.
