CHENNAI: Herbal remedies can cure cancers, even in an advanced stage, according to S. Tamilarassan, a Siddha specialist from Siddha Medical Care Centre. Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, Dr. Tamilarassan, warned people against indisciplined living and drew their attention to the range of herbal remedies available for all sorts of health problems including cancers caused by tobacco. Even the Ramayana and Mahabharata are full of references to ayurvedic medicines, he said. In addition to herbs, Siddha practitioners also use metals to prepare medicines. For example, some smokers' hands shudder uncontrollably due to depletion of reserves of silver and iron in the body caused by excessive tobacco use. While tobacco use is high across the country, it is particularly high in Andhra Pradesh. According to him, the soaring temperatures predispose people to indigestion and constipation. To avoid these, people consume tobacco, he said. Visitors to the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre also had opportunity to view a range of herbal plants with healing properties for a range of illnesses including diabetes, asthma and cancer.
