MANGALORE: The Indian Dental Association, Mangalore branch, on Tuesday organised a rally to mark World No Tobacco Day to spread awareness about the harmful effects of smoking. In a background paper issued on the occasion, the president of the association's district unit, R. Gopakumar, said recent studies have shown that using tobacco can damage health. There is substantial evidence in scientific literature to prove that there is a "cause-and-effect" relationship between the use of tobacco and coronary artery disease, lung cancers, infertility and psychiatric illness. Dr. Gopakumar said that more recent surveys have shown that passive smoking can be more dangerous to pregnant women with chances of abortion being high. Quoting World Health Organisation initiatives, Dr. Gopakumar said spreading the anti-tobacco message is working wonders as more people are learning about the harmful effects of smoking.
