Farmers lathi-charged as rally turns violent

Staff Correspondent

BANTWAL: A rally convened by the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Vidyut Mathu Nadineeru Balakedarara Hitharakshana Samiti to highlight problems faced by farmers and power consumers turned violent here on Tuesday. The police had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the protesters near Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. (MESCOM).

The Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherjee, who rushed to the spot, told The Hindu that a convention of farmers earlier in the day passed off peacefully.

Trouble started when the farmers took out a procession from the venue of the convention and wanted to lay siege to the tahshildar's office. They were dissuaded by the police from doing so.

Mr. Mukherjee said the farmers who were prevented from entering the tahsildar's office submitted a memorandum to the authorities concerned. They were angry that were not allowed to lay siege to the tahsildar's office.

In the melee that followed, a section of the crowd reportedly threw stones at the policemen on bandobast duties forcing them to retaliate. Mr. Mukherjee said a police head constable from Vittla police station and a constable from KSRP sustained injuries in the process.

He said a case of rioting has been taken up against those involved. No arrests have been made in this connection.
