Road project not shelved, says Corpn.

Officials clarified that the Corporation had not `gifted' any part of the land meant for the road. On the other hand, the promoter had handed over 1.02 acres for the road. Officials deny gifting portion of the land

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation has denied the Opposition's charge that it had shelved the project for an 80 ft road in Krishnarayapuram. Officials clarified on Monday that the civic body had not gifted any portion of the land earmarked for the road. In fact, a layout promoter had handed over 1.02 acres to the Corporation for the purpose.

Reacting to the Opposition's statement that the Corporation had `gifted' the land required for the 1.12 km road, thereby reducing the proposed road's width to 40 ft, the officials said that by handing over land to the Corporation the promoter had saved a few lakhs for the civic body.

The road had been proposed to serve as a bypass connecting Avanashi Road at Peelamedu with 100 Feet Road in Gandhipuram.

The officials said the Corporation was keen on developing the road as it would ease congestion on Avanashi Road.

Officials blamed

Opposition parties raised this issue at the Council meeting last month and accused the officials of "allowing" the promoter to "encroach" on the land meant for the road and reiterated the charge in a memorandum signed by more than 30 of its members.

Officials said that now that land for 40 ft had been acquired, the remaining one acre would have to be done by the Local Planning Authority. Of this, 55 cents belonged to the promoter and would have to be given for the road.

The promoter had also committed in writing that this piece of land would also be handed over when the road work began.

The road would be formed as stipulated in the town planning scheme and the Corporation would implement the scheme as per the norms mentioned while approval was given, officials said.

They, however, said encroachments would have to be removed along Sanganur Canal (to the north of the layout) and also in the eastern side through which the road should lead to Peelamedu.
