Teacher training to get IT accent

G.Mahadevan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The teacher training programmes at the Academic Staff College of the University of Kerala is all set to acquire an IT accent. The vice-chairman of the University Grants Commission, Rajesekharan Pillai, on Tuesday inaugurated a computer laboratory at the College that has been set up with a Rs. 25-lakh grant from UGC. Now, there are 35 computers at the lab and this would eventually be increased to 50.

Initially, the College would offer teachers a 28-day `IT-oriented Orientation Programme' designed to familiarise them with the basic operations of a computer and to use the Internet.

"More than 70 per cent of the college teachers who come for our refresher programmes know nothing about computers and Internet. We want to change that. Earlier our orientation programmes were only about soft-skills development," said the College director, Jacob John Kattakkayam.

Familiarisation

The orientation programme would train teachers to operate both `Windows' and `Linux'-based operating systems. There would be lessons on how to create and save text files, on how to set up and deliver a `power point' presentation and on how to download, save and use data from the Internet. Each computer at the lab has been linked to the high-speed Internet line available at the Kariavattom campus.

Once this orientation programme stabilises sessions at the computer lab would become an integral part of all refresher programmes at the Academic Staff College.

This year the college has planned 36 refresher courses. Over the years the College has been getting UGC aid worth about Rs. 90 lakhs a year which, according to Dr. Kattakkayam, is the highest among all such colleges in the country.
