THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cantonment police have arrested three persons in connection with the theft of passports and costly electronic equipment from a travel agency in the city early this month. The police identified the accused as Nijam, Shaibu and Nizam. They are residents of Karackamandapom in Nemom police station limits. As many as 580 passports were stolen from Fly Way Tours and Travels on May 8. The burglars had also made away with computers, printers, air tickets, cheque books and visa stamped passport books. The police said after the theft, the accused made anonymous calls to the travel agency demanding money for returning the loot. They also contacted several of the passport holders in an effort to extract money from them. The police traced the calls and sprung a trap on the accused persons. An official said that they recovered 290 passports from the accused. The case was cracked by a police team led by the City Police Commissioner, Balaram Kumar Upadhyaya. The accused were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody for a period of 15 days.
