ECIL develops solar-powered lighting system for weaker sections

HYDERABAD: A new ECIL-developed rural solar-powered lighting system, meant for weaker sections housing, will be initially installed in remote areas and colonies under ITDAs. This was agreed to in principle by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, when officials of the ECIL made a demonstration of the system, christened `Rajiv Jyothi.' Dr. Reddy directed the Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Housing Corporation, Sunil Sharma, to formulate detailed proposals in consultations with ECIL officials, according to a press release from the Chief Minister's Office. Making the presentation, the ECIL General Manager, G.V. Prasada Rao, said the system would illuminate 10ftx12ft room and supply lighting for 12 hours per single charge.

It would work even under cloudy conditions. Elaborating the advantages, he said the low cost and solid state bulb's life under the solar system would be more than 1,00,000 hrs (20 years) as against 1,000 hrs of the conventional bulb.

Its maintenance was virtually free and it was environmental-friendly and easy to install.
