KOCHI: The election to elect the new district panchayat president will be held on Wednesday morning at the District Panchayat Conference Hall. With the District Congress Committee declaring the former district panchayat vice-president, John P. Mani, as the official candidate on Tuesday, Mr. Mani's chances of becoming the president has become almost certain. The UDF now has 13 seats in the District Panchayat and the LDF has seven. Three members are remaining with the senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran's National Congress (Indira). The election was necessitated by the resignation of K.B. Mohammedkutty from the presidentship as he took over as the district president of the National Congress (Indira). Mr. Mohammedkutty had also resigned his membership of the District Panchayat along with the presidentship. The vice-president, K.R. Subhash, had taken over as the acting president after that. The LDF has decided to field Syamanthabhadran as candidate, according to Gopi Kottamurikkal, district secretary of the CPI(M). He is also the district secretariat member of the CPI(M). Mr. Kottamurikkal said that the LDF had no idea about the stand the three members of the NC(I) would take in the poll. The three NC(I) members have a tough choice to make on Wednesday as even their absence on medical grounds will amount to rejecting the party whip. This will invariably lead to their disqualification as District Panchayat members.
