Help tobacco growers shift to other crops: Governor

Staff Reporter

Vice-chancellors of agricultural varsities to be requested to make suggestions

BANGALORE: The Governor, T. N. Chaturvedi, on Tuesday said he will speak to the vice-chancellors of agricultural universities to provide know-how on alternative crops for tobacco growers.

At a function organised by the Karnataka Cancer Society and Elder Pharmaceuticals Ltd. to inaugurate a tobacco de-addiction clinic, the Governor said he will ask the vice-chancellors to study the feasibility of asking tobacco growers to shift to others crops.

"There has to be a concerted effort from all sections of society. A joint endeavour of the Government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the corporate sector will really help," he said.

Taking note of a presentation made by G. Killara, Head of the Radiation Oncology Department, Curie Centre of Oncology, on the "Curse of tobacco," the Governor said it is a matter of concern that subsidy for tobacco growers is higher that that for farmers who grow foodgrain.

He wanted doctors and NGOs to play a vital role in "making people alert and alive, and creating awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco."

The Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, R. Ramalinga Reddy, assured the organisers that he will consider introducing lessons on the ill-effects of tobacco in textbooks at the primary level.

He said he will discuss the matter with the officials of his department and find out at in which class the lessons can be introduced.

Centre inaugurated

Earlier, the Governor inaugurated the Karnataka Cancer Society-Nulife de-addiction centre and released the nicotine replacement therapy kits, developed by Elder Pharmaceuticals, the marketers of Nulife.

The general manager of Elder Pharmaceuticals, Tarun Kumar, and members of the Karnataka Cancer Society were present.
