Tapping from pipeline hits water supply

Special Correspondent

BWSSB to start patrolling lines

BANGALORE: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has now decided to patrol the pipelines through which water is pumped from the Cauvery to the city. The reason? Persistent attempts by villagers on the outskirts to divert water, reportedly to irrigate their fields.

On Tuesday, many parts of Bangalore under the Central, North, South and East Divisions could not be supplied drinking water. The BWSSB had given the information on Monday, giving the reason that repairs were being taken up on the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme 3rd Stage pipeline near Kanakapura. The board explained the reasons for the repairs.

Some persons reportedly tried to steal the spindle rod of a valve and, in the process, damaged the pipeline which supplies 270 million litres of water to the city, at Tungaani village near Kanakapura town, the BWSSB said. The theft attempt was made on Sunday night, and when it was found out, water supply was stopped and the leakage plugged.

On Monday night, some people tried to damage a valve about 1 km away from Tungani near Kallahalli on Kanakapura, the board officials said. Since Tuesday morning, engineers and workers of the board were repairing the damage after shutting down water supply through the pipeline.

Complaints lodged

"Police complaints have been lodged against the miscreants at Kanakapura police station, and the board has taken steps for patrolling the pipeline all 24 hours to see that such incidents are not repeated,'' BWSSB officials said. Water supply to parts of the city, as notified on Monday, is likely to be affected on Wednesday.

Last year too, there were attempts to divert water from the Cauvery pipeline by people in some rural areas, and this resulted in disruption of water supply to the city.
