Our space: Building material dumped on a road connecting Dwarakanagar and Sankara Mutt. Photo: K.R. Deepak
VISAKHAPATNAM: With the onset of summer, construction activity begins, and peaks as the season advances. Any construction activity goes on in phases and from time to time, material, mainly sand and chips of stone, is required. The material is brought by trucks and dumped on the road. In several lanes and bylanes, one has to drive carefully and at nights, one has to be extra cautious. The material reduces the space available for traffic. Those taking up construction activities have to take into consideration the inconvenience they are causing to road-users. They are supposed to dump the material in such a way that it causes the least trouble to others. The material must be used for construction as early as possible. The Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam (MCV) levies a charge for dumping the material for construction as well as debris. While debris can be cleared without much delay, the same cannot be said of building material since it depends upon the pace of construction. But the MCV people step in if the problem persists for long. On a road connecting Dwarakanagar and the Sankar Mutt main roads, the available space is further reduced by the erection of a shamiana. Neither can everybody afford a house huge enough to celebrate functions, nor can he hire a hall for small domestic functions. Hence roads are used for the purpose by erecting shamiana. Doubtless, it compounds the problems of road-users.
