New biotechnology company to be set up in Mysore

Firm to be formally inaugurated in the city during July-August 2005

MYSORE: A new biotechnology company, which will carry out stem cell research, will be setting up shop in Mysore shortly.

Aries Biotech Labs, promoted by medical and Ayurveda professionals, scientists, engineers, and information technology specialists, will also carry out research and development activities in herbal extracts, healthcare products, dietary supplements, and nutraceuticals.

The biotechnology company is expected to be formally inaugurated at Brindavan Extension in the city during July-August 2005, according to a press release.

To begin with, Aries Biotech Labs will focus on nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, and herbal extracts. Already the company is working on developing nutraceuticals for controlling and managing diabetes and increasing lipid levels.

During the second phase, the company will carry out stem cell research to provide relief to diabetic patients and on neuro-degenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The centre will also concentrate on development of immuno-suppressants, immuno-modulators, immuno-adjuvents, selective enzyme production for industrial and lipid lowering statins, the statement said.

The second phase of the company's activities also includes starting of diploma, degree and postgraduate courses and research for doctoral degrees in biotechnology. In addition, the company proposes to offer courses in clinical informatics and start research and development and clinical trials through Research Process Outsourcing.

In its third phase, the company will focus on large-scale production of herbal extracts, bio-pharmaceuticals, bio-fertilizers, and bio-insecticides with an eye on the export market.

The chief promoter of the mega project is H.G. Sethumadhavan, who enjoys experience in basic and medical sciences.

He will be ably supported by a team of experts including M.L. Shanaranarayana, a well-known herbal chemist; J.S. Venugopal, a noted environmental and material scientist; Muktabai, former scientist at the Central Food Technological Research Institute; and L. Vasantha and K.V. Raghavendra Rao, former professors at the Government Ayurvedic College, Mysore, the press release added.

H.R. Gundu Rao, Professor of Lab Medicine and Pathology, University of Minnesota, U.S., and T.N. Manjunath, Holistic Health Consultant, Indira Gandhi International Cultural Centre, Mauritius, will be the international coordinators of the project. The press statement said the management of the company will be fashioned along the lines of a three-stage management system with experienced specialists at the top level, supported by a second line of junior executives at the middle level, and a working group at the third level.
