SIRSI: Several environmental organisations on Thursday urged the Union Government to reject a proposal made by the Railways seeking permission to acquire 245 hectares of forestland for the Hubli-Ankola railway line as against the 965 hectares sought earlier. In a press release issued here, the organisations alleged that the proposal is an eyewash to mislead the people. They wondered how the Railways will be able to lay the line by acquiring just 245 hectares of land when it requires 965 hectares. The organisations warned that if the Union Environment Ministry gives its consent, the biodiversity of Western Ghats will be destroyed. The initiative is led by Environmental Protection Committee and Vrusksha Laksha Andolan. UNI
