This Day That Age
Two vestibuled Janata trains in which passengers can walk from one end of the train to the other are expected to be brought into service on the Indian Railways within the next few months. Conductors will be posted on these trains to look after the needs and conveniences of third class passengers. This was disclosed by the Railway Minister, Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, in a broadcast from the Delhi station of All India Radio on June 1. The Minister, who was speaking on passenger amenities, said that dining cars on trains were being re-designed on more utilitarian lines and low-cost standard menus to suit regional tastes were being evolved. Referring to a "new scheme" which the Railways were implementing, Mr. Shastri said that mobile cinema vans were being put into service to exhibit select documentary films by rotation at important stations throughout the country in order to "usefully fill the time of passengers waiting for trains, and at the same time to give them a visual idea of what is going on in this great country of ours." It was also proposed to guide the passengers on how they could take the fullest advantage of the various amenities being provided now.
