KARIMNAGAR: Alarming drought conditions followed by acute shortage of fodder for the cattle forced farmers to snatch away several tonnes of fodder from the cattle fodder camp being organised by the district Animal Husbandry Department in Husnabad mandal on Thursday.

In order to benefit the farming community, the Animal Husbandry Department had set up fodder camps in upland Chigurumamidi, Husnabad and Jillela villages and started distribution of fodder. Except for Husnabad mandal, in all other places the camps were running successfully.

The farmers of the Husnabad mandal comprising 32 villages in its jurisdiction were reeling under acute shortage of fodder. When the fodder camp was inaugurated on May 23, farmers have ransacked the camp and snatched away about 24 tonnes of fodder. Later, the authorities have regulated the heavy rush by informing the farmers of all villages to come in a phased manner for proper distribution.

However, on Thursday there was mad rush for the fodder at the camp with hordes of farmers thronging the camp. Though, the authorities have made arrangements for the distribution of fodder to 10 villages farmers, but additional 10 villages farmers also arrived at the camp causing confusion and chaos.

But sensing shortage of fodder, the farmers violated the queue and started snatching away the fodder. It is estimated that about 20 tonnes of fodder was snatched away by the farmers. When the situation was out of control, the authorities informed the police.

The police tried to disperse the mob by resorting to mild lathicharge and in the melee a youth sustained injuries. Infuriated over the incident, the farmers staged a dharna on the main road condemning the police action.
