Targets 30 p.c. market share by 2007

BANGALORE: Samsung India which on Thursday launched the lightest GSM handset with Radio FM, has worked out an aggressive strategy to become the leader in mobile convergence. By 2007, the company is targeting a 30 per cent market share (now 19 per cent) and this is expected to come from the colour/camera phone market.

Announcing this at a press conference, the Director of Samsung Telecom, H. C. Ryu, said the company was working in 4G technology. The company had already secured 220 patents in 4G technology and this global development would be leveraged for making a strong headway in the Indian market.

The two handsets launched are: SGH C230 and SGH X640, the first one having digital stereo FM radio weighing 70 gram and the second comes with a high resolution VGA camera with 4x digital zoom.

The Indian market was growing and the fifth largest (after China, the U.S., Japan and Germany), Mr. Ryu said and added that the strategy was to come with the product design and innovative marketing that were best suited for India. In line with this, Samsung had mobile handsets with features in seven Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Marathi.
