Tariff raised for managed leased line network

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Thursday announced higher tariff for the Managed Leased Line Network (MLLN), an integrated network platform mainly used by business subscribers.

Making a distinction between leased circuits of the classical kind and leased circuit that are provided through MLLN technology, TRAI has fixed tariff the ceiling for 64 kbps domestic leased circuits of the classical kind for distance over 500 km at Rs. 44,000 while for MLLN it will be Rs. 51,000.

Besides 64 kbps, the distance-based tariff ceilings have been specified for capacities of 128 kbps and 256 kbps. For capacities higher than 256 kbps and below 2 mbps, the tariff is kept under forbearance due to low and specialised demand for these capacities.

Those wishing to subscribe to MLLN will be subject to a higher price ceiling compared to classical circuits.TRAI said it would review the ceiling tariff after a year, based on the prevailing market trends and other relevant factors at that time. In specifying the higher tariff ceiling for MLLN provided leased circuits, TRAI examined the additional costs associated with providing the value-added features with service.

Meanwhile, TRAI has extended the date for submission of comments on billing issues in the Consultation Paper up to June 15 after receiving representation from some stakeholders. The paper was released on May 2 while the original date for submission of comments was May 31.
