Advani's statement, an insult to Hindus, says Singhal

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Working president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Ashok Singhal on Thursday criticised Bharathiya Janata Party president L.K. Advani, for expressing regrets over the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Mr. Advani should publicly apologise that he made the greatest mistake of taking out the `rath yatra' and `betraying' Hindus. Mr. Advani's statement made in Pakistan on Wednesday was an insult to 90 crore Hindus, he charged.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Singhal asked whether Mr. Advani did not know that a temple earlier stood in the place of the Babri Masjid. Without pulling down the mosque how could a temple be constructed? Mr. Singhal was upset that Mr. Advani had made such a statement in Pakistan which was "inimical towards India".

On the status of the Ayodhya issue, Mr. Singhal said a meeting of the `Margadarshik Mandal' (sadhus' meeting) is to be held in Hardwar on June 14 and 15. Most of the `margadarshiks' and `dharma gurus' would attend the meet where a decision on the issue will be taken.

On the arrest of the Kanchi Acharyas in the "Sankararaman murder case", he said the senior Acharya had created more than 475 trusts in the country and was the most respected saint.
