THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Greg Chappell appointment as the Indian cricket team's coach was ratified by the working committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on the first day of its two-day session at Kovalam near here on Thursday. Though the BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahendra declined to make any comment on the day's discussion to the waiting media, informed sources confirmed Chappell's appointment as recommended to the working committee by the BCCI hi-power committee last month. The meeting, according to the BCCI vice-president, Rajiv Shukla, also took up the issue of the various court cases against the BCCI, especially those related to its elections filed by the Chennai-based Netaji Cricket Club and the Sir Thyagaraya Cricket Club, both affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. The former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya led the discussion on this controversial topic. However, it remained inconclusive before the meeting disbursed for the day after a three hour thirty-five minute sitting. A decision on this issue would be taken only after the committee hears the views of the TNCA president and chairman of the BCCI finance committee, N. Srinivasan on the subject on Friday morning. The committee also heard the complaint against the Rajasthan Cricket Association president Lalit Modi raised by BCCI vice-president Kamal Morarka. Mr. Morarka is reported to have demanded the expulsion Mr. Modi. The meeting resolved to authorise the BCCI president to take a final decision on the matter. The meeting also stamped its approval on India's participation in the triangular tournament (West Indies is to be third team) being hosted by Sril Lanka in July-August and the tour to Zimbabwe for a two Test series and a triangular series in August-September. Further it was also decided to clear the tour of Sri Lanka to India in November-December and the tour of South Africa to play five ODIs in December. The meeting as it resumes on Friday is likely to discuss the crucial TV rights issue, the conduct of the ICC Champions Trophy and the possible merger of the Women's Cricket Association of India with the BCCI.
