Prakash bows out

NEW DELHI: Prakash Amritraj lost 3-6, 4-6 to the top seed Justin Gimelstob of the U.S. in the first round of the $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Yuba City, U.S.

Harsh Mankad did well to qualify for the main draw of the Challenger in Surbiton. Harsh had beaten Sadik Kadir of Australia 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, Florin Mergea of Romania 6-1, 6-3 and Frederik Nielsen of Denmark 6-1, 7-6(7).

In the ITF women's tournament in Surbiton, Shikha Uberoi lost 4-6, 1-6 to Vilmarie Castellvi of Paraguay. Shruti Dhawan also lost in the qualifying event 6-7(4), 3-6 to Laura Peterzan of Britain.

Shikha, however, made it to the doubles quarterfinals with her sister Neha, beating Leanne Baker of New Zealand and Francesca Lubiani of Italy 6-1, 6-4.
