TIRUPATI: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has formally grounded the lining work of Sai Ganga canal, which is expected to wet a huge chunk of agricultural land in Chittoor and Nellore districts. Mr. Reddy, who was here on Thursday to take part in the "Rythu Sadassu" at the Veterinary College grounds, unveiled a plaque to inaugurate the project. The plaque would be shifted to the project site near Satyavedu for installation.The Telugu Ganga project provides water to Chennai through the Satya Sai Ganga canal (previously Kandaleru Poondi canal). The lining and ayacut development work grounded on Thursday would be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 90 crore. Work is currently on from 62nd km to 151.887th km in Chittoor district under the purview of Srikalahasti circle. While the project was aimed at providing irrigation to 47,300 acres through the branch canals 6, 7, 8A, 8B and 9, it could only meet the requirements of 10,051 acres so far. Addressing the public, the Chief Minister proclaimed that reviving agriculture in the drought-hit districts was the sole aim of his Government. Among the other announcements were a plan to bring 6,000 hectares under drip irrigation in the district this year, grounding of work on the second phase of Galeru-Nagari and Handri-Neeva in two months and a mega plan to link minor irrigation tanks. Among those present were the Tirupati MP, Chinta Mohan, chief whip, N. Kirankumar Reddy, ZP chairperson, M. Reddemma, MLAs, G. Arunakumari (Chandragiri), M. Venkataramana (Tirupati), G. Muddukrishnama Naidu (Puttur), P. Ramachandra Reddy (Piler), K. Narayanaswamy (Satyavedu), R. Chenga Reddy (Nagari), S.C.V. Naidu (Srikalahasti), G. Kuthuhalamma (Vepanjeri), K. Prabhakar Reddy (Thamballapalle), N. Subramanyam (Sullurpet) and TUDA chairman, B. Karunakar Reddy.
