CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Transport Department has earmarked Rs. 88 crores to improve its services including Rs.10 crores for the maintenance of bus stands during the current financial year, the Transport Minister, Randeep Singh Surjewala, told a meeting of Commercial Officers of the State Transport Department here on Thursday. The Genera Managers of all the bus depots were also present. Mr.Surjewala directed them to find ways and means to generate additional resources and improve the services for passengers without increasing the bus fares. They should reduce the operational cost of the State Roadways. Small shopping complexes should be set up at all bus stands to facilitate passengers. While asserting that the policy of auction of shops at bus stands was completely irrational, he said that a comprehensive policy should be formulated on yearly basis. Also, the goods being sold at bus stands should have rational rates. Mr.Surjewala said that all bus-depots would be fully computerised and linked on-line with each other and the State headquarters in a phased manner within the next five years to improve their functioning and ensure better coordination. At present, one bus-stand was fully computerised on pilot basis and five others were being computerised. He also directed the officers to set up water coolers, equipped with Aquaguard, at bus stands to provide hygienic drinking water to the passengers. Such water coolers, he said, could be set up with the help of private participation and voluntary organisations. Expressing concern over the bad condition of public toilets, especially for women, at bus stands, he directed these be improved on war-footing. He directed the officers to use these public toilets themselves. The help of non-governmental organisations should be taken in maintaining public toilets at bus stands. The policy of Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) could be adopted for public toilets and drinking water facilities, he added.
