Rs. 300 crores to be spent on rural sanitation campaign

Rs. 300 crores to be spent over next three years


  • Rs. 196.55 crores sanctioned to the State Water and Sanitation Mission for campaign in 18 districts
  • Campaign is aimed at accelerating sanitation coverage in rural areas
  • The programme will cover all rural families
  • Community sanitary complexes will be constructed for landless families

    HASSAN: The Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj is all set to launch the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) in the State on which Rs. 300 crores will be spent in the next three years.

    Disclosing this to presspersons here on Thursday, the Additional Secretary to the department, L.K. Atheeq, who is the Director, Karnataka Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (KRWSSA), said a sum of Rs. 196.55 crores has been sanctioned to the State Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM), which comes under the KRWSSA, to take up the campaign in 18 districts in the first phase. Hassan district, which has received Rs. 12.37 crores, will shortly launch the campaign.

    The TSC is aimed at accelerating sanitation coverage in rural areas and to generate demand for sanitation facilities by creating awareness, and health education.

    It will focus on eliminating defecation in the open to minimise the risk of contamination of drinking water sources, converting dry latrines to flush latrines and eliminating the manual disposal of faeces.

    The programme will cover all rural families and incentives will be given to families living below the poverty line to build and use toilets. Community sanitary complexes will be constructed for landless families, which the users will have to maintain. Child-friendly toilets with water supply will be constructed in all government schools and anganwadis.

    The campaign will be undertaken the lines of the literacy campaign with the help of Stree Shakti self-help groups and neo-literate self-help groups. More than 15 per cent of the funds will be spent on creating awareness among rural people on the importance of sanitation, he said.
