HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday expressed its appreciation at the peaceful polling in the by-election to the Penukonda Assembly seat and claimed that it would retain the seat with a huge majority. Talking to reporters, the TDP leaders - K.Yerran Naidu and K. Ram Mohan Rao - said the people had exercised their franchise freely and there were no reports of irregularities. "Democracy has been protected in spite of attempts by the ruling party to vitiate the atmosphere," they said. Asked about the comparison made with Bihar by another TDP leader, Mr.Naidu quipped " All should appreciate. There is no need to compare with other States". However, at a separate conference earlier, the TDP MLAs - N. Janardhana Reddy, Ch. Rajeshwara Rao and D. Uma Maheshwar Rao - alleged that curfew-like situation prevailed in the constituency, which reminded one of the fearful atmosphere in Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir. They said that several old people and women could not cast their vote as vehicles were not allowed to transport them.
