VILLUPURAM: Instead of "lashing out against the Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu," the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, should utilise their presence in the Cabinet to advance the interests of the State, the Pattali Makkal Katchi founder-leader, S. Ramadoss, said here on Thursday. He told a press conference that in the past year neither she nor her Cabinet colleagues had taken up the public issues related to the State with the Central Ministers. On the contrary, the Chief Ministers of the Opposition (BJP)-ruled States, such as Rajasthan (Vijayaraje Scindia) and Madhya Pradesh (Babulal), held elaborate discussions with the Central Health Minister, R. Anbumani, both in Delhi and in their respective States. Dr. Ramadoss said he had been appealing to the Chief Minister to invite the Central Ministers for talks and also mooted the idea of making a Chief Secretary-level official liaise with the Central Ministers, but in vain. Even when Ms. Jayalalithaa went to Delhi for deciding the State plan size with the Planning Commission, she did not meet the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram.
Entrance exam
Dr. Ramadoss said for providing a level-playing field to the rural students and to ensure social justice, the Government must pass an ordinance to dispense with the entrance examination system (for admission to professional courses) and to put a cap on the quota for "improvement candidates" at 10 per cent. He would lead an agitation in Chennai on June 7 against the entrance examination system . The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, and the Communist leader, D. Pandian, would also participate.
DMK support
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, too had supported the agitation proposal. Dr. Ramadoss welcomed the proposal of Dr. Anbumani to pass legislation for banning smoking and use of tobacco in cinema and in television serials. Even the explicit consumption of heady beverages should be curtailed on these media, he said.
