HYDERABAD: A tsunami warning system will be set up at a cost of Rs.125 crores in Hyderabad by September 2007, according to the Secretary, Department of Ocean Development (DOD), Harsh K. Gupta. Talking to newsmen after inaugurating the first Indo-US workshop on carbon sequestration at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here on Thursday, Mr. Gupta said the proposed system would be able to make accurate prediction as the ocean bed pressure sensors would have the capacity to discriminate between a tsunami and a normal wave. Mr. Gupta, who earlier watched a demonstration of a synthetic gas hydrate developed by NGRI scientists, stressed the need for developing inexpensive alternative fuels, particularly in view of the high import bill for petroleum products. He said the DOD had identified two potential areas for gas hydrates along the east coast and was in the process of developing a method to identify and quantify them. The drilling technology for extracting fuel was being developed with Russian collaboration. Inaugurating the workshop, he warned against the dangers posed by carbon dioxide release as was evident in the change of glaciers. M.O. Garg, Director, Indian Institute of Petroleum, said that petroleum and diesel were adding lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and said that parallel efforts were on to find out alternative sources like ethanol. The NGRI Director, V.P. Dimri, the Executive Director, NTPC, R.R. Sonde, and the Chief Scientist, Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, B. Peter McGrail, were among those who addressed the workshop.
