NEW DELHI: The Government on Friday reconstituted the National Advisory Council (NAC), nominating two new members. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, heads the NAC. The reconstituted Council will have a term of one year. The members of the reconstituted NAC are: Aruna Roy, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, Rajsamand, Rajasthan; Prof. C.H. Hanumantha Rao, chairman, Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad; Jairam Ramesh, Congress member of the Rajya Sabha; Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, national coordinator, Lok Satta, Hyderabad; Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, former secretary to the Government; Dr. Madhav Chavan, PRATHAM; Dr. A.K. Shiva Kumar, adviser, UNICEF; Dr. D. Swaminadhan, president, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Research and Social Action, Hyderabad and Dr. N.C. Saxena, former IAS officer. The two new members are: Sehba Hussain from Lucknow and currently member-secretary and executive director, BETI Foundation (Better Education through Innovation) and Prof. Mrinal Miri, vice-chancellor, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, an official release said here. The Council was set up in June last year to oversee the implementation of the National Common Minimum Programme. It has been meeting periodically and forwarding recommendations on many subjects and programmes to the Government. The outgoing members are Sam Pitroda, who has been made chairperson of the National Knowledge Commission, and Jean Dreaze, who has expressed inability to devote enough time for meaningful participation in the Council.
