CHITRADURGA: The Distance Education Directorate of Kuvempu University has accorded recognition to the bachelors degree in Basava Tatva (B.A. in Basava Tatva) at the Basava Tatva College run by the Basava Kendra Sri Murugha Mutt, Chitradurga. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Sri Shivamurthy Murugharajendra Sharanaru, the pontiff of Sri Murugha Mutt, announced that the mutt has started a new course in philosophy. Seers of the mutt are being trained in Basava philosophy for the past seven years to prepare them to play a special role in society. The traditional system of training seers was based on Vedic principles that stressed on religious rituals such as modes of worship, chanting of mantras, and meditation. In earlier times, there was no need for the pontiff of a mutt to concentrate on other vital important aspects of society. Realising the need for proper training for pontiffs, who are expected to guide people in changing times, the Basava Tatva College was started in 1998, the pontiff said. The degree in Basava Tatva stresses on three areas social, theoretical and democratic aspects of society. Students have to undertake a comparative study of all religions and this will enhance their social responsibility. They also have to take up community service such as sweeping roads to inculcate a sense of social service. They also reach out to people and create awareness among them about the social problems through summer camps, environment and water conservation programmes and other activities of social relevance, the seer said.
