Commits suicide

Nagercoil: Santhakumar (20), son of Madasamy of Vadasery, committed suicide, consuming poison on Saturday.

According to the police, Santhakumar took the extreme step, owing to acute stomach pain.

The police have registered a case.

Local holiday

TIRUNELVELI: The Collector, Atul Anand, has declared a local holiday on June 21 in view of Aani car festival of Sri Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal festival.

In a statement he said all educational institutions and government offices in Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli taluks would remain closed. In lieu of this holiday, July 9 would be the working day. — Staff Reporter

Study on children affected by tsunami

CHENNAI: Representatives of Palam, an organisation which is conducting a study on how children, students and educational institutions are affected by tsunami worldwide and doing relief works, met N. Rangasami and Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Ministers of Pondicherry and Andhra Pradesh, the States which were also affected by the December 26, 2004 tsunami.

They also met the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi.

The State Government is already implementing several of the demands of the organisation.

After meeting the Kerala Chief Minister, Oomen Chandy, the organisation would present a report to the State Governments concerned and to the United Nations, says an organisation release. — Special Correspondent

Prince of Arcot's appeal to Muslims

CHENNAI: The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Abdul Ali, on Saturday said education was key to the development of a community. An educationally backward community could never progress.

In a statement here, he appealed to Muslims not to depend only on the Government for their uplift. They should not aim for a "backward or most backward" status given by the Government, but develop their own potentialities.

He urged the majority community to take keen interest in the progress of the minorities also for the advancement of the nation. — Special Correspondent

Award for service to humanity

CHENNAI: Population expert and founder of the United Writers Association, Chennai, K. Thiagarajan has been awarded the Academic Fellow of Canadian Guild of Authors, Canada, in recognition of his service to humanity and international understanding. Dr. Thiagarajan will also be conferred the Gourav Seva Ratna by the Indian Board of Education and Research, Kolkata during the second international congress on "Health and Environment" on July 10 in for his contribution and commitment to cause of society, says an association release. — Special Correspondent

"Form panel to study delta ryots' problems"

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, has urged the State Government to form a high-level committee to study the problems of Cauvery delta farmers for finding out a permanent solution to the issue.

In a statement on Saturday, Mr. Vasan said the committee should comprise representatives from farmers' associations, agriculture scientists and cooperative officials. He said the Government, instead of finding a permanent solution, was taking temporary measures which would not serve the purpose. It was the Government's duty to settle the issue once and for all to help the delta farmers.

Mr. Vasan said a majority of farmers in the delta were not in a position to pay interest for crop loans availed by them. The Government should waive the interest component. Short-term loans should be converted into long-term interest-free loans with easy re-instalments. It should also waive the crop loan for farmers in tsunami-affected areas in Nagapattinam district, he said. — Special Correspondent

Rain in Vellore

VELLORE: Heavy rain lashed Vellore town and suburbs for more than two hours on Saturday evening, bringing relief to residents from the sweltering heat of the past few days. The downpour started at 5.30 p.m. flooding several thoroughfares. — Staff Reporter

Constable held

ERODE: The Erode town police on Friday evening arrested a police constable, who had gone missing.

According to police, Devaraj, attached to the Erode town police, was on unauthorised leave from April, 2005. He had quarrelled with some persons at an IMFL shop in Marapalam area, Erode.

On a complaint, he was arrested by the Erode police. - Staff Reporter

Drinking water supply

Udhagamandalam: With complaints of sewage mingling with drinking water being received by the district administration from the residents of the 19th ward of the Ooty municipality, the civic authorities have initiated steps to set right the problem.

It was stated that on Thursday some persons had developed stomach problems after drinking the municipal water. - Staff Reporter

Vermicomposting training programme

PUDUKOTTAI: Under the joint auspices of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the National Pulses Research Centre, a free training programme in vermicomposting methods will be held for the benefit farmers at Andakkulam village on June 9.
