In a statement on Saturday, Mr. Vasan said the committee should comprise representatives from farmers' associations, agriculture scientists and cooperative officials. He said the Government, instead of finding a permanent solution, was taking temporary measures which would not serve the purpose. It was the Government's duty to settle the issue once and for all to help the delta farmers. Mr. Vasan said a majority of farmers in the delta were not in a position to pay interest for crop loans availed by them. The Government should waive the interest component. Short-term loans should be converted into long-term interest-free loans with easy re-instalments. It should also waive the crop loan for farmers in tsunami-affected areas in Nagapattinam district, he said. Special Correspondent
