Mary-Ann wins title, becomes WIM

NEW DELHI: Mary-Ann Gomes claimed the Asian girls' (under-16) chess title and the nine-game Woman International Master norm that comes with it to lead India's 1-2 finish at Namangan, Uzbekistan, on Friday.

Mary-Ann, who has now completed her WIM-title requirements, drew her ninth and final round with Uzbekistan's Irina Gevorgyan to beat the field with 6.5 points. Ramya Krishna took the silver, following a three-way tie at six points, after beating Uzbekistan's Yulduz Hamrakulova.

Her final norm at Namangan also makes her the first Indian girl to complete the WIM title requirements in three successive tournaments in the space of less than five months.

The results (ninth and final round):

Boys: Nguyen Duc Hoa (Vie, 6) bt Evgeniy Pak (Uzb, 6); Andrey Kvon (Uzb, 6) drew with G.N. Gopal (Ind, 4); S. Tologontegin (Kgz, 6.5) bt A. Uglu Kozubai (Kgz, 3.5); Aleksandr Kasyan (Uzb, 6) bt Liem Le Quang (Vie, 4.5); Rahul Sangma (Ind, 6) bt Daneir Aliev (Uzb, 1); Djmashid Mustafaev (Uzb, 3) lost to K. Vijay Keerthi (Ind, 4). Draw by default: Shahin Saheh (Iri, 3) and Mohammad Khademi (Iri, 3.5).
