Over 1,000 candidates appear for LAWCET

TIRUPATI: The Lawcet-2005 (Law Common Entrance Test) was held in two centres in Tirupati on Saturday.

For the three years course as against 1330 candidates who applied 1139 have appeared while for the five years stream-- it was 397 against 496.

Prof. Hemalatha Devi, Head of the Department of Law, SV University officiated as the Regional Coordinator for the entrance test held here. - Special Correspondent

Indirect polls to civic bodies opposed

ANANTAPUR: The former legislator and national council member of CPI, K. Ramakrishna, has criticised the State Government on its decision to go for indirect polls to the civic bodies. Talking to newspersons here on Saturday, he stated that indirect polls to municipalities and corporations would give the ruling party an upper hand to wrest the civic chief posts by their better manoeuvrability. Horse-trading of councillors and corporators would become the order if the majority was thin.- Staff Reporter

Fishing nets distributed

NELLORE: Fishing nets were distributed for the tsunami-hit fishermen of Kavali mandal, at a function held at Kavali town on Friday evening.

Fishermen belonging to Pallipalem, Lakshmipuram, Ramudupalli and other villages who were earlier identified by the concerned departments, were benefited by the distribution of nets. - Staff Reporter

3,000 acres to be distributed

NELLORE: In the second phase of land distribution in the district on July 30, it is proposed to distribute about 3,000 acres in Gudur division.

While 443 acres have been identified in Manubolu mandal, 343 acres have been found to be available for distribution in Sydapuram mandal.

The beneficiaries will be identified and selected by the concerned MROs in the division and all of them will be provided with a folder containing relevant details. - Staff Reporter

Fake journalist arrested

Rajahmundry: The police have arrested a fake journalist and his aide, who tried to extort a private computer unit in the city. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the DSP, P.H.D. Ramakrishna, said that the police had arrested Yella Subba Rao and Vakada Satish Kumar on a complaint from M. Prasad of Real Technologies computer centre. According to the complainant, Ramamohan of Kakinada, who posed as reporter of a private television channel had earlier threatened Prasad for selling important spare parts of computers without sale documents. RTC driver dies in mishap

KURNOOL: The driver of an APSRTC bus died in a road mishap and eight passengers received injuries in a road accident near Palledevikunta between Yemmiganur and Mantralayam in Kurnool district on Saturday.

According to reports, the driver of the bus belonging to Kuppam depot, M.A. Khan, 45, died on the spot while eight passengers sustained injuries. The mishap occurred when the bus and another bus of KSRTC coming from Bangalore collided. Staff Reporter

One killed in wall collapse

ANANTAPUR: An average of 10.2 mm rainfall was recorded in 39 mandals of the district on Friday night. According to officials, Gudibanda mandal recorded the highest rainfall of 60 mm followed by Anantapur 55, Rapthadu 53, Singanamala 48, Atmakur 42 and Rayadurg 41 mm.

A woman was killed in a wall collapse in the district headquarters. In Anantapur town, one Thimmakka, 65, of Pilligundala Colony also died in a wall collapse due to heavy rain. In all, 50 thatched and old houses and huts collapsed, mainly in slum areas. Staff Reporter

Two boys drowned

CUDDAPAH: Two boys were drowned in a whirlpool in Papaghni river near Veligallu project in Galiveedu on Saturday. The boys -- Chand Basha, 10, and Hanif, 11 -- went to in Gandimadugu and were drowned, according to the police. Their parents found their bodies floating in the river. The Galiveedu police have registered a case._Staff Reporter

Runaway tipper kills two

ADILABAD: Two persons were killed and another was seriously injured in a freak road accident in front of the RTC bus stand here on Saturday. The accident was caused by a tipper which apparently went out of control. According to eyewitnesses, the tipper, first a woman identified as Mukta, killing her on the spot. It then hit a cobbler Parashuramulu sitting on the edge of the road, injuring him seriously. The tipper mowed down Ganesh Reddy of Karanji in Jainad mandal who was talking to a friend on the edge of the road. The driver and the cleaner of the vehicle abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. __Staff Reporter

Cinema theatre ransacked

KURNOOL: An irate mob ransacked a theatre to protest against the delay in screening of a movie starring Chiranjivi here in the early hours of Saturday. According to reports, a huge crowd gathered at Anand theatre for the movie though the representatives of distributors announced that the movie would be released on Saturday.

The mob attacked the ticket counter and damaged it. Later, the crowd attacked the buses passing by and caused minor damage to five buses. A few passengers also sustained injuries. __ Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education has brought out a booklet listing engineering colleges, course details and information about admissions to help engineering and pharmacy aspirants. The booklet is priced at Rs. 20 a copy and can be obtained from the Council's Masab Tank office or the colleges. __ Staff Reporter
