THENI: : Heavy rain, which lashed Theni district last night, was useful to farmers engaged in preliminary field work. By and large, the summer rain would help the administration solve drinking water crisis in Theni and nearby villages. After many decades, all parts of the district including grey areas such as Andipatti have received heavy rain. About 441.20 mm rain has been recorded against the average 36.77 mm in this summer. The highest rainfall was recorded in Aranmanaipudhur and lowest in the Sothuparai dam. Even as water has been released from the Periyar dam for raising seedlings for the first crop of the double cropping area in the Cumbum valley, farmers said the summer rain would improve ground water sources in grey areas and perennial crops in hilly regions. The preliminary work of levelling the field was in full swing in Cumbum, Uthampalayam, Chinnamanur, Goodalur and Veerapandi.
Dam levels up
The flow into major dams has increased sizably, thanks to sharp showers in the catchment areas. The level in the Periyar reservoir stood at 112.80 feet and the storage 1, 360 mcft. The flow into the dam was 389 cusecs and the discharge 204 cusecs. The Vaigai dam has 28.81 feet of water with storage of 324 mcft. The flow into the dam was 52 cusecs and the discharge 41 cusecs. Similarly, water reached 42.60 feet in the Manjalar dam. Storage was 220.43 mcft. The inflow and discharge were 118 cusecs and 20 cusecs respectively. Despite the poor inflow, the level has touched 92.35 feet in the Sothuparai dam. The storage of the dam reservoir was 51.81 mcft and the inflow 20 cusecs and discharge 3 cusecs. The chief amounts of rain recorded in various places in the district in mm were: Vaigai dam 41, Manjalar dam 41, Sothuparai reservoir 13, Periyar reservoir 53, Thekkadi 14, Andipatti 24, Aranmanaipudhur 70.4, Bodinaickanur 43.6, Goodalur 24, Periyakulam 19.2, Uthamapalayam 31 and Veerapandi 67.
