Folklore seminar in October

To explore a vanishing tradition

KOZHIKODE: `Folklore and discourse of marginalised' will be the central theme of a seminar that is being organised as part of the 28th edition of Indian Folklore Congress. It will be held at Calicut University campus at Tenhipalam from October 1 to 3.

The sub-themes of the programme cover a variety of topics that are considered as pressing issues in folklore as a discipline in general and Indian folklore studies in particular, Raghavan Payyanad, the head of Folklore Studies Project, said on Monday.

The seminar will touch upon folklore and voices; discourse and power; folk theories and methods in the changing world; mass culture and folklore; civil society, social inequality and public folklore; globalisation and folklore.

Vanishing traditions

"The main concern of the discipline of folklore for the last two centuries has been the features and process of vanishing traditions," said Dr. Raghavan Payyanad about the theme of the seminar. "It is only in the post-modern period, folklorists have become more conscious about the politics behind each and every folklore forms. As a result, folklore is considered as a channellised expression of the respective political system in which there is a centre where all powers are concentrated and most of the folks are marginalised and regulated by the centre," he added.

The seminar will explore various aspects of this theme.

The registration fee of Rs. 300.00 for participation in the Congress can be paid at the time of registration. The last date for receiving synopsis and the paper is August 21, 2005.
